Mission:

Our mission is to support and encourage women who are experiencing emotional difficulties during pregnancy or the postpartum. We help bring back the harmony and peace in their lives so that this can truly be a wonderful and happy time!

Case Statement:

Postpartum and pregnancy emotional adjustment disorder (PPAD) consists of a myriad of symptoms and disorders, including anxiety, sadness, exhaustion, sleep disturbance, depression, anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, psychosis, etc.

10-20% of pregnant or postpartum women experience depression or anxiety disorder. As many as 50-80% of women experience some level of PPAD.

Mother to Mother provides telephone support and encouragement to women with PPAD. Mother to Mother is the only service of its kind in the St. Louis metropolitan area. We serve all women in the metropolitan St. Louis area, free of charge.

Support volunteers are mothers who have also experienced pregnancy related or postpartum emotional adjustment issues. Volunteers are trained to be skilled listeners. They are not, however, trained counselors or psychologists.

As part of our mission, we also seek to increase the community's awareness about PPAD through education and training. We regularly speak to organizations such as Parents as Teachers, counseling centers, mothers groups, etc. In addition, we have appeared as guests on several local radio and news programs, and highlighted in stories printed in Newsweek and Parents magazine as a model program.

Testimonial

"Mother to Mother is dedicated to helping women cope, adjust and adapt to the emotional trauma brought on by motherhood. In my time of need, Mother to Mother provided me support from women volunteers who had dealt with the same types of trauma I was experiencing. Nobody told me how hard parenting would be except Mother to Mother volunteers. They listened to me and helped me feel better about myself."
